In memory to all of my Labrador puppies, and Patrick the Romany Gypsy who taught me everything l needed to know to care and train my Labrador puppy shandy.
Everytime one of my Labrador dogs passed away, l always swore l would never have another Labrador puppy, as the pain was so great, but l did, and have done for the past 50 years and have now decided to write about them, although l am not a breeder or an expert, just a Labrador puppy lover with some wonderful memories and 50yrs of experience
From the heart: I swear l was about to burst into tears when at last after saving up all of my pocket money this 6 yr old child me, Peter was at long last given permission to go and purchase my first Labrador puppy.
It was love at first sight, l'll never forget her little wet black nose and funny walk until the day l die, l was sold in that instance, l named her shandy because of her colour and she was by my side until the day she passed away.
Mom and dad had some fun with her when we used to spend the long summer evenings outside at the local village pub the Bull & Bush at Mackworth in Derby, a beautiful area of England here in the UK, it took the landlady of the pub at least two weeks to realise that at 6 yrs old l wasn't ordering lots of pints of shandy ,a mixture of beer and fresh lemonade , but just calling my dog's name.
Shandy and myself, we got into so much trouble that summer, instead of working in the fields helping the local farmer Mr Tomlinson to bring the hay in, we were off playing in the fields and much to my delight shandy took to playing in our local park's lake swimming and chasing her tail.
At the bottom of the farmers field lived my best friend a real live gypsy called Patrick, but being a gypsy they all called him paddy as he came from ireland.
For as long as l could remember paddy stayed every summer at the farm in return for working on the farm and his food, he was absolutely amazing, our first meeting was when shandy started to chase the chickens until she came across paddy , he held his hand up and in an instance she stopped in her tracks and was under control.
He then had shandy sitting, it was if he held a magicians wand over her, l was totally in awe of this quiet gypsyman and we became really close friends as he explained the need for me to learn how to train and care for shandy....his favourite quote was, there are no bad dogs only bad owners.
During that summer Patrick taught me everything l know about how to train and care for a Labrador puppy.
